Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary: Maharashtra’s Hidden Tiger Treasure

Oct 18 2024
Nestled in the lesser-known Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a real gem if you’re looking to escape the crowd. While places like Tadoba are packed with tourists and photographers, Tipeshwar offers a quieter, raw wilderness experience—and trust me, this place is no less magical when it comes to wildlife, especially tigers. Spread over an area of 148.63 square kilometers, this sanctuary serves as a critical refuge for various species of flora and fauna. It remains one of the lesser-known tiger reserves in India, yet its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes make it a must-visit for those looking to explore the raw beauty of the wilderness.

About Tipeshwar

Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush haven of biodiversity, spread over approximately 149 square kilometers. The sanctuary’s terrain is a mix of rolling hills, valleys, and streams, creating a diverse habitat that supports a rich variety of plant and animal life.

Flora

The forests of Tipeshwar are dominated by teak, which forms about 60% of the canopy, alongside other tree species like Ain, Bija, and Dhawda. The undergrowth features a variety of grasses, bamboo groves, and medicinal plants, providing food and shelter for the sanctuary’s wildlife. The sanctuary’s lushness peaks during the monsoon season when the landscape transforms into a green paradise.

Fauna

Tipeshwar is home to a thriving population of Bengal tigers, which has grown due to focused conservation efforts. Originally hosting only a handful, the tiger population now includes over 20 individuals, including cubs. The sanctuary also shelters leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, four-horned antelope (chausingha), and wild boar. It’s a great spot for birdwatching too, with over 180 species, such as the Indian Pitta, peafowl, and grey junglefowl, making it a paradise for avian enthusiasts.

Distances to Other Parks

  • From Tadoba: Tipeshwar is about 210 km from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, making it around a 4-5 hour drive
  • From Pench: The sanctuary is around 230 km from Pench National Park, a similar 4-5 hour drive.

How to Reach Tipeshwar

  • By Air: The nearest airport is in Nagpur, around 170 km away.
  • By Train: The closest railway station is Adilabad, about 35 km from the sanctuary.
  • By Road: Easily accessible from cities like Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Hyderabad. If you’re traveling by bus, you can get off at Pandharkawada, the nearest town.

Tipeshwar Gates and Safari Details:

Tipeshwar has two main gates for safari entry:
  • Sunna Gate: Located closer to NH44, about 7 km from Pandharkawada.
  • Mathani Gate: About 23 km from Pandharkawada.
Both gates offer morning and afternoon safaris:
  • Morning: From 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM (timing shifts slightly with seasons).
  • Afternoon: From 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Tipeshwar does not offer night safaris, unlike some other tiger reserves, as the sanctuary closes after the evening slots to protect the wildlife from disturbances. It’s best to book your safari online as slots are limited—only 24 jeeps are allowed per day (12 per gate)

Safari Experience

Tipeshwar is quickly becoming a go-to spot for tiger sightings, with a population of around 20 tigers, including cubs. One of the most talked-about tigers in recent months is a male named Veer, who returned to the sanctuary in 2023 after wandering for nearly two years. Veer, known for the distinctive “V” pattern on his forehead, has been sighted multiple times since his return, much to the excitement of regular visitors and locals alike. Another famous tigress, Archi, and her cubs were spotted at the Sunna Gate in the summer of 2024. These consistent sightings have bolstered Tipeshwar’s reputation as a rising star for tiger tourism

Resorts and Homestays

While Tipeshwar doesn’t have a vast array of luxury accommodations, it offers several good options:
  • Wildlife Luxuries – Tipai: A sustainable luxury resort near Sunna Gate, with forest villas and a serene, secluded environment
  • Junglee Bageecha Farmstay: This charming farmstay near Sunna village is a simple, cozy place with spacious rooms and open areas to enjoy nature
  • Avani Tiger Resort: A newer addition near the sanctuary, offering basic amenities and access to the core area
Additionally, you can find homestays and guesthouses around Sunna and Mathani, offering an authentic local experience

Which are the best gates for Tipeshwar safari?

When it comes to tiger sightings and planning safaris at Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Sunna Gate and Mathani Gate are your primary options. Both gates offer access to the core zone, where most of the tiger sightings occur, including the famed sightings of tigress Archi and the returning tiger Veer. The forest here is relatively sparse, making wildlife easier to spot compared to denser reserves The Sunna Gate, being closer to Pandharkawada and NH44, is the more popular entry point for tourists coming from Nagpur or Amravati. tipeshwar safari gate It’s recommended if you’re planning a short trip or arriving from these cities. The Mathani Gate, on the other hand, is a bit farther from Pandharkawada but offers a quieter experience, with fewer crowds. Visitors coming from western Maharashtra (like Pune or Nashik) often prefer Mathani Both gates provide access to the core areas, which are key for tiger sightings, but there is no night safari offered at Tipeshwar. This is to ensure minimal disturbance to the wildlife. Safaris are held twice daily, with morning and afternoon slots. During the peak summer season, the morning safari starts as early as 5:30 AM

Buffer and Core Zones:

At Tipeshwar, most of the safari routes run through the core zone, which is the best area for tiger sightings. Unlike Tadoba, there isn’t much differentiation between buffer and core gate access for tourists. However, the buffer zones still provide rich wildlife experiences, with sightings of leopards, sloth bears, and a wide variety of bird species

Conservation Efforts and Challenges

But, like any sanctuary, Tipeshwar isn’t free from challenges. The growing tiger population is fantastic, but that also brings human-wildlife conflict issues, especially with nearby villages. Tigers sometimes stray out of the sanctuary, making locals nervous about their livestock. Recently, a video went viral where a tigress had ventured into one of the resorts on the periphery of the forest and was photographed right outside the room from the glass window. Conservationists are working hard to mitigate these issues, but it’s a delicate balance between protecting both the wildlife and the people living near the sanctuary. Habitat fragmentation is another worry. Tipeshwar sits within an important tiger corridor linking it to other reserves like Tadoba and Pench, and any disruption here could be a big problem for the tigers’ movement. There’s always the looming threat of development, and keeping these corridors intact will be key for future tiger conservation.

Why every wildlife lover must visit Tipeshwar

Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts, especially those keen on seeing tigers without the usual tourist crowds. Its relatively small size compared to other reserves, like Tadoba and Pench, means you get a more intimate experience with nature. The sanctuary boasts a growing tiger population, with sightings of both adult tigers like Veer and tigress Archi becoming more common. Beyond tigers, you can spot a variety of other wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, and numerous bird species What makes Tipeshwar stand out is the serene and undisturbed landscape, perfect for photography and those who appreciate the thrill of spotting wildlife in its natural habitat.
