Hinauta introduces higher plateau country, escarpments and gorge systems, while Harsa offers a quieter, lower-volume experience. On a short stay it can be better to repeat the most practical zone and protect your field time. With three or four nights, combining zones becomes much more worthwhile because Panna’s landscape genuinely changes between sectors.

Hinauta brings a different forest
The Hinauta side is associated with plateau country, escarpments and gorges. It adds landscape variety and is especially interesting for travellers who enjoy sloth bear, leopard habitat and dramatic terrain as much as tiger sightings.
Harsa offers a quieter rhythm
Harsa currently operates at a lower safari capacity than Madla. Its appeal is not that it is a secret better zone, but that it offers another way to experience Panna with a different traffic pattern and forest feel.
The Ken River defines the reserve
The river is central to Panna’s identity. It shapes the reserve’s gorges, riverine habitat, cliffs and viewpoints, and gives the landscape a character that is immediately different from most Central Indian tiger forests.
Zone combinations should have a reason
On a two-night trip, changing zones simply for variety can waste useful safari time. On a longer stay, a considered mix of zones often makes sense because the terrain changes enough to make each side feel genuinely different.
Khajuraho complements the safari
Panna pairs beautifully with Khajuraho because the distances work. The better itinerary keeps the temple visit separate enough that neither the wildlife nor the heritage experience feels squeezed.

Panna sits on the Vindhyan plateau, where dry deciduous forest breaks into tablelands, cliffs, ravines and deep gorges. The Ken River runs through this terrain and creates some of the reserve’s most distinctive scenery. Tigers are the headline, but leopard, sloth bear, chital, nilgai, crocodiles and an exceptional vulture community make Panna rewarding even when the big cats remain out of sight.

Understanding Panna’s safari zones.
Madla, Hinauta and Harsa are not simply three names on a permit. Their terrain, access and safari character are different enough to influence how a trip should be put together.
Madla
Madla is the main gateway for travellers arriving from Khajuraho and is the most practical base for many first visits. It combines rocky country, river influence and varied wildlife habitat. For a short stay, repeating Madla can make complete sense when the permits and lodge location line up well.
Hinauta
Hinauta introduces a different side of the reserve, with plateau terrain, escarpments and gorge systems. It is especially rewarding for travellers who enjoy the landscape itself and want a broader sense of Panna beyond the more familiar Madla approach.
Harsa
Harsa runs at a lower daily vehicle volume than Madla. That does not automatically make it better, but it can add a quieter safari rhythm and another perspective on the reserve when the logistics work.
Repeat one zone or combine them?
For a two-night stay, focus usually works best. Repeating the most practical zone can give you stronger field time than driving farther simply to add another name to the itinerary. With three nights or more, combining zones becomes much more worthwhile because Panna’s terrain changes noticeably between sectors. Even then, the aim is not to tick all three once each; a better plan may repeat one area and add one contrasting zone.
The Ken River
The Ken is central to Panna’s ecology and scenery. Riverine stretches, cliffs and gorge systems shape the reserve and support a very different visual experience from the teak and sal forests elsewhere in Central India. Separate Ken-side or gharial experiences should be treated as distinct activities rather than casually folded into the tiger-safari permit.
Permits and weekly closure
Panna permits are booked through the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department system. The usual Wednesday half-day closure pattern applies across MP tiger reserves, while vehicle and guide charges sit outside the online permit. We check the actual timings and operating rules again for your travel dates before confirming the plan.
How many nights work well?
Two nights is enough for a focused three-drive safari. Three nights gives the reserve more room to breathe and allows a sensible zone combination. Four nights or more suits travellers who want additional field time, landscape variety and a relaxed Khajuraho component without compressing the safari.

Which are the main safari zones in Panna?
Madla, Hinauta and Harsa are the three main safari areas we work with in Panna. Madla is the most commonly used gateway, Hinauta has dramatic plateau and gorge country, and Harsa can offer a quieter safari rhythm. Which one we use depends on live permit availability and how the rest of the itinerary fits together.
How close is Panna to Khajuraho?
Madla is roughly 25 km from Khajuraho, which is why Panna works so naturally with a Khajuraho itinerary. Actual transfer time still depends on your hotel and route.
How many nights should I spend in Panna?
We usually prefer three to four nights for a wildlife-focused visit. Two nights can work for a compact add-on from Khajuraho, while a longer stay gives more room for repeated safaris and different zones.
Where are Panna safari permits booked?
Panna permits are booked through the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal. We check live availability, entry timings and any rule changes before confirming the safari plan.
Are guide and safari vehicle charges included in the online permit?
Guide and park-vehicle charges are additional to the online permit and are paid separately at the gate. We spell out that structure clearly in your Safari Lab quote so there is no ambiguity.
Is Panna closed on Wednesdays?
MP tiger reserves follow a Wednesday half-day closure pattern. We still check the operating calendar for your exact dates because seasonal and administrative rules can change.
What wildlife can I see besides tigers?
Panna is also known for leopard, sloth bear, chital, nilgai, crocodiles and rich birdlife, especially vultures and other raptors associated with the reserve’s cliff and gorge habitat.
Can Panna be combined with Bandhavgarh?
Yes. Panna and Bandhavgarh work well as a two-reserve Central India itinerary, particularly when starting or ending via Khajuraho. We plan the transfer day so it does not compromise the safari schedule at either reserve.
