Cloaked in Lilac, Sanjay Nair's award-winning tiger photograph from Pilibhit

TERAI TIGER SAFARIS · UTTAR PRADESH

Pilibhit. The forest that changed our story.

Tall grass, sal forest, canals and wetland light. This is where a photograph by Safari Lab founder Sanjay Nair first travelled far beyond the forest—and where our connection to the Terai became deeply personal.

WHY SAFARI LAB

Our Pilibhit story began behind the camera.

A single encounter here became “Cloaked in Lilac”—and introduced Sanjay’s work to audiences around the world.

“Cloaked in Lilac” — Sanjay Nair. Nature inFocus Photography Awards 2022, Jury Selection: Wildscape & Animals in Their Habitat.

Photographed in Pilibhit, “Cloaked in Lilac” placed a tiger amid purple water hyacinths: beautiful at first glance, but also a record of an invasive plant affecting a protected wetland. The image became a Jury Selection in the Wildscape & Animals in Their Habitat category at the Nature inFocus Photography Awards 2022 and was subsequently published by outlets including The Times and The Better India. It was Safari Lab’s first photograph to travel widely—and it reflects how we approach Pilibhit today: with patience, local understanding and attention to the whole landscape, not just the tiger in the frame.

A forest tied to our own journey

Pilibhit is where one of Sanjay’s photographs first reached a global audience. That personal history gives this destination a place in Safari Lab’s story beyond a conventional package page.

Local knowledge matters here

Tourism arrangements in Pilibhit have evolved quickly. We work from current routes, gates, reporting points and local conditions instead of recycling an old Chuka-only itinerary.

The landscape, not only the tiger

Sal forest, tall grass, canals, wetlands and the Sharda Sagar edge give Pilibhit its identity. The light, water and habitat are central to the photographic experience.

Responsible field behaviour

Pilibhit’s narrow routes and wildlife movement demand restraint. We value quiet observation, safe vehicle positioning and guides who place animal welfare before a hurried photograph.

Every arrangement confirmed

Your proposal identifies the active route, safari sessions, accommodation, vehicle, guiding, meals and transfers. We do not promise a particular tiger, gate or sighting.

Wildlife resort accommodation in Pilibhit

YOUR SAFARI, YOUR WAY

Pilibhit needs ground-aware planning.

Accommodation here is less standardised than in older tiger-tourism hubs, and the most familiar property name is not automatically the best base for every active route. We compare the current reporting point, road access, meals, room expectations and transfers from Bareilly, Lucknow or a suitable railhead before recommending a stay. Chuka accommodation or activities are included only after their current operational and regulatory status is confirmed.

DISCOVER THE DESTINATION

Where sal forest meets water.

Read the destination guide

Pilibhit belongs to the Himalayan Terai Arc: a long, narrow landscape of sal woodland, tall grass, swamps, rivers, canals and the Sharda Sagar reservoir edge near the India–Nepal border. Tigers move through a forest that also supports deer, wetland wildlife and rich birdlife. The contrast between dense green corridors and open water makes Pilibhit visually unlike Central India’s drier reserves—and rewards travellers who notice habitat as closely as animals.

THE KNOWLEDGE BEHIND YOUR SAFARI

Understanding Pilibhit as it operates now.

Routes and ecotourism arrangements have changed in recent seasons. We work with what is actually operating now instead of building an itinerary around old labels or outdated Chuka-era assumptions.

01Mahof, Mustafabad and current access

Mahof and Mustafabad are familiar names in Pilibhit, but that alone is not enough to plan the safari. We check the route actually operating on your dates, where you report and what the confirmed booking gives you access to before choosing accommodation.

02The Barahi-side route

The Barahi-side tourism route is a newer addition to Pilibhit’s safari landscape. We check whether it is operating on your dates, how entry works and what the permit actually covers. We do not present it as interchangeable with Mahof or Mustafabad without checking the actual booking.

03Chuka and the Sharda Sagar edge

Chuka is closely associated with Pilibhit’s ecotourism identity, but accommodation, boating and other activities can be affected by administrative or regulatory decisions. We verify what is legally operating for your dates before including it in an itinerary or quote.

04A different kind of tiger landscape

Canals, tall grass and wetland edges influence both animal movement and visibility. Pilibhit rewards patient observation and guides who understand these linear routes. We never translate a past photographic encounter into a promise of a repeat sighting.

05Reaching Pilibhit

Bareilly is often the most practical air or rail gateway, while Lucknow and other rail connections may suit particular journeys. Road times depend on the accommodation and reporting point, so the transfer is planned after the safari base is understood.

06How we turn access into an itinerary

We start with your dates, travellers, field-time preference and comfort level. Then we verify current routes, permits, vehicle and guide arrangements, suitable stays and transfers. If an advertised activity is not operating, we explain the change and design a practical alternative rather than quietly substituting it.

Nikita and Sanjay make an amazing team at Safari Lab. They are extremely polite, professional, and highly experienced. From recommending the perfect hotel to arranging an excellent guide, every suggestion they made was absolutely spot on. Mara Simba is a wonderful property, especially for Indian travelers, including those who prefer vegetarian or Jain food. The hospitality was exceptional, and the rooms were comfortable and well maintained. A special mention to our guide, Gabriel, who was knowledgeable, courteous, and just as enthusiastic as we were about spotting wildlife. His passion and expertise made the safari experience even more memorable. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I would highly recommend Safari Lab to anyone planning a safari trip to Masai Mara.

I have availed their services on two separate occasions—first for four safari bookings in Tadoba and later again for four safari bookings in Gir. On both trips, the experience was seamless and exceptionally well-managed from start to finish. The team was highly professional, responsive, and meticulous in handling all aspects of the bookings.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Before you set off.

Why is Pilibhit special to Safari Lab?

Pilibhit is where Safari Lab founder Sanjay Nair made “Cloaked in Lilac,” the first of his photographs to travel widely. It became a Jury Selection in the Wildscape & Animals in Their Habitat category at the Nature inFocus Photography Awards 2022 and appeared in international and Indian media.

What does “Cloaked in Lilac” show?

The image shows a tiger amid purple water hyacinths in Pilibhit. Its beauty carries a conservation context: water hyacinth is an invasive plant that can displace native vegetation and reduce oxygen in water bodies.

Which gates currently operate in Pilibhit?

Mahof and Mustafabad are familiar access points, and the Barahi side is now part of the safari picture too. Because routes and reporting arrangements can change, we check what is actually operating on your dates before deciding where you should stay or report.

Can I stay or take activities at Chuka?

Only when the accommodation or activity is actually operating on your dates. Chuka arrangements have changed more than once, so we check the current situation before we put anything into the itinerary.

How many nights should I spend?

Two nights provide a compact introduction; three or four nights give more field time and a slower experience of the forest, wetlands and birdlife. The final duration should reflect current safari availability and transfer timings.

Which gateway is best?

Bareilly is often practical, while Lucknow and suitable railheads can work for particular itineraries. We choose the route after considering your transport schedule, accommodation and safari reporting point.

Is Pilibhit suitable for photography?

Yes. Tall grass, canals, wetlands and changing Terai light create distinctive photographic opportunities. Wildlife remains unpredictable, and no particular tiger or scene can be guaranteed.

Can you guarantee the Barahi male or another known tiger?

No. Individual tigers move naturally across the landscape. Historical sightings and photographs help tell Pilibhit’s story but are never used as a promise of a future encounter.

What will my quote specify?

Your personalised proposal states the accommodation, room category, meals, transfers, safari sessions, current route or gate, vehicle and guiding arrangements, plus exclusions.

What happens after I enquire?

Share your dates, group size, comfort preference and desired number of drives. We will verify current tourism operations and provide a personalised itinerary and quote.
