Pench, The Land of The Jungle Book

One of our favorite forests in India

Sprawled across the Satpura foothills, Pench is a vibrant mosaic of teak forests, rolling meadows, and winding rivers that breathe life into one of Central India’s most enchanting landscapes. Celebrated for inspiring Kipling’s Jungle Book, the park today is home to thriving tiger and leopard populations, along with packs of wild dogs and an extraordinary diversity of birds. Pench’s blend of rich wildlife, scenic beauty, and peaceful, uncrowded safaris makes it a perfect choice for travellers who want the classic Central Indian jungle experience without compromising on serenity or authenticity.

Day 1

Arrival and First Safari

Your journey to Pench begins with a comfortable morning pick-up from Nagpur, followed by a relaxed 2.5–3-hour drive through villages, fields, and the first hints of Satpura forest. Once you arrive, check into your cosy jungle lodge, sip on a welcome drink, and take a moment to settle into the quiet of the landscape. After lunch, you head out for your first afternoon safari — the perfect introduction to Pench’s mix of open meadows, tall teak, and unexpectedly rich wildlife. This is classic tiger country, but it’s also where you might spot wild dogs coursing through the grass or owls tucked deep in the canopy. You return to the lodge by early evening, unwind, have a warm dinner, and ease into the unhurried rhythm of Pench’s nights.

Day 2

Double Safari Day

Start your day early with a gentle wake-up call and a hot cup of tea or coffee before you set out for your morning safari. As the first light filters through the teak forests, Pench really comes alive — deer herds moving through the meadows, birds calling from every direction, and the possibility of a tiger or wild dog pack on the move. After the safari, return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast and some downtime. Following lunch, head back into the park for your afternoon drive, often in a different zone, giving you a fresh landscape and new chances for wildlife sightings. By evening, settle in at the lodge, swap stories from the day, and unwind before calling it a night in the calm of the jungle.

Day 3

Final Safari and Departure

Wake up early for one last morning safari (optional), a final opportunity to absorb Pench’s calm forests and catch any wildlife you may have missed. After the drive, return to the lodge for breakfast and a bit of relaxation before you check out. Then begin your journey back to Nagpur, wrapping up your Pench adventure with a head full of sightings, quiet moments in the forest, and memories you’ll be talking about long after the trip ends.

Why Pench is a Park that you must explore

  • A cross-border wilderness

Pench stretches across both Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, giving travellers access to multiple gates, varied landscapes, and wider wildlife movement.

  • Real “Jungle Book” country

This is the forest that inspired Kipling, and you feel it instantly in the mix of deep teak, open meadows, and rivers cutting through the landscape.

  • Reliable big-cat sightings

Pench’s tiger and leopard population is healthy, well-distributed, and active across zones, making sightings genuinely rewarding rather than rare strokes of luck. The blend of open meadows and forest patches gives you long viewing corridors where big cats often patrol, hunt, or rest.

  • Bagheera Sightings

Few parks offer such a high chance of seeing the melanistic leopard aka 'The Black Panther' in action — one of Pench’s signature experiences.

  • Smooth, crowd-free safaris

Spread-out zones and multiple entry points mean quieter routes, better sightings, and far less congestion than the bigger parks.

  • Perfect for first-timers and loyalists alike

Easy access from Nagpur, great lodges, and diverse habitats make Pench both beginner-friendly and endlessly rewarding for repeat visitors.
